Have You Looked Up Hudson's 2010 Census Mail Participation Rate?

On the Census Bureau's Take 10 Challenge Map ( http://2010.census.gov/2010census/take10map/ ) you can track how well your community is participating in the census by seeing what percentage of households have mailed back their census forms.  Insert your Zip Code and click Local View.

Is Hudson above or below this national rate? The Census Bureau is challenging all communities to achieve a higher rate in 2010 than they did in 2000.  Nationally, we matched the 2000 Census rate of 72%.  The 2000 Census return rate for the City of Hudson was 64%.  We're close at 59% and may match our 2000 rate in the end. Be sure to encourage your friends and neighbors to either call the number above or speak with the Census Takers when the knock at your door!!

Displayed data as of: Tuesday, April 27, 2010 *

* The rates displayed are the rates achieved by Tuesday, April 27, 2010, prior to the cut-off for door-to-door non response follow-up operations. Final rates will be posted in the fall and will include late mail returns.

Open the door to a census taker and open doors for your community.

The Census Takers have begun going door-to-door to households that did not mail back their forms.

Census takers are your neighbors – people from your community, hired by the Census Bureau, to go door-to-door and collect census information from residents that have not sent back their 2010 Census forms.  Please cooperate with the census takers to ensure an accurate count of your community.

They also will verify that housing units indicated as "unoccupied" to us by the postal service or others are indeed unoccupied and vacant.

By being counted you are standing up for what your community's needs are. That's why census takers are so important. A census taker is a person from your community who is hired by the Census Bureau to make sure that your neighborhood gets represented as accurately as possible. The census taker's primary responsibility is to collect census information from residences that have not sent back their 2010 Census form.

The Census Bureau provides the census taker with a binder containing all of the addresses that Did Not send back a filled out census form

The census taker then visits all of those addresses and records the answers to the questions on the form

If no one answers at a particular residence, a census taker will visit that home up to six times, each time leaving a door hanger featuring a phone number; residents can call the number on the hanger to schedule the visit. Following the sixth attempt to contact you, the Census Taker may then speak with your neighbors, to inquire as to the number of people who reside at your address.

The census taker will ONLY ask the questions that appear on the census form.

Do I have to talk to the census taker?  Yes.

Your participation in the 2010 Census is vital and required by law, (Section 221, ofTitle 13 of the U.S.Code). However, rather than rely on criminal charges, the Census Bureau is very successful in getting participation by explaining the importance of the questions we ask and how the information benefits our communities.

Your privacy and confidentiality is our priority:

The census taker who collects your information is sworn for life to protect your data under Federal Law Title 13. Those who violate the oath face criminal penalties: Under federal law, the penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both.

When a 2010 Census Taker visits your home, please be respectful and courteous.

Our Goal: A Full & Accurate Count of all People Living in the City of Hudson & Columbia County

It's in Your Hands!

Census Information

"The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct."  - Article 1, Section 2 United States Constitution

This is found under the section of the Constitution regarding the House of Representatives as a way of determining numbers of representatives.

Census information affects the numbers of seats your state occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives. And people from many walks of life use census data to advocate for causes, rescue disaster victims, prevent diseases, research markets, locate pools of skilled workers and more.

Census Facts

Here are a few facts you should know about the Census.

Safe: By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’sresponses with anyone, including other Federal Agencies and Law Enforcemententities for 72 years.

Easy: The Census questionnaire Form contains only a few simple questions and takes just a few minutes to answer and return by mail.

Everyone Counts: The census is a count of everyone living in the UnitesStates.  This includes people ofall ages, races, ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens.

It's very important that you fill in the form and promptly mail it back.

Local: Every year the Federal Government can allocate over $300 Billion in funding to states and communities.

This money can have a serious effect on our local services such as:

·                 HEAP – Housing Energy Assistance Program

·                 Food Stamps

·                 Child Care

·                 Highway Improvement Programs

·                 School Funding for Various Programs & School Lunches

·                 Public Transportation & Bus Services

·                 Police & Fire Protection and Programs

·                 And much more…

Revenue Sharing is based on Population and Census Figures.

Any loss of population means loss of Federal & State dollars for our community and that means higher taxes…

As you can see, a full and complete Census Count is very important for our community!

When you do the math, it's easy to see what an accurate count of residents can do for our community. Better infrastructure. More services, a brighter tomorrow for everyone. The information the census collects helps to determine how more than $300 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure and services.
